Jordan - Desert Trek to Petra

Jordan - Desert Trek to Petra Overview

CATEGORY: Trekking

Trekking through the deserts of Jordan to reach legendary Petra, we will follow the trails that the nomadic Bedouin people and their livestock have travelled for generations. During our journey to Petra we trek over dry wadis, open sandy dunes and rocky desert but will also encounter hot springs, Roman remains, crusader castles, Neolithic houses and green valleys fed by streams.

The scenery is mesmerising; the canyons and gorges coming alive with the changing light and glowing in various shades of red and orange. At night camp we camp in Bedouin tents and have dinner by candlelight, whilst the desert sky offers us an unrivalled view of the stars. We finally arrive at the Siq and the entrance to the undoubted highlight of the expedition, the incredible city of Petra, the ancient capital of the Nabateans, improbably carved from the rose red rock face.

After thoroughly exploring the enchanting ruins we head to the Dead Sea for a well-deserved rest, where we can soak our weary feet at our spa resort and enjoy the unique buoyancy of the waters. This is one of our more approachable treks. While remaining challenging, pack animals will carry our gear, and the trails do not cover any major ascents although scrambling over scree, and trekking in and out of gorges in high temperatures will keep you fit.

"The trekking was harder and hotter than I expected, but all the better for it. Each day was different and magical in it’s own way with Petra as the grand finale. "
