An Arctic equivalent of New Zealand, with spouting geysers, continuously erupting volcanoes and enormous glaciers. Iceland is the ideal environment for those wanting to explore the wilder side of life. Combine the Tolkeinesque scenery with colourful folklore, vibrant literature and proud local people descended directly from the Vikings and you will find adventure that is hard to rival and practically on your doorstep.
Starting in the modern city of Reykjavik, we will trek through a landscape that changes dramatically each day. Once we arrive in the showcase region of Fjallabak, in the central highlands, we begin our journey exploring around Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano. We’ll camp next to wild rivers and are rewarded for our initial day’s hiking with an evening of relaxation in the crystal clear Landmannalaugar hot springs. We then step into a landscape that feels so otherworldly that some Icelanders continued belief in elves and goblins seems to gain some credit.
Giant lava flows, sweeping stark glacial valleys, pastel coloured mountains, boiling hot springs and surreally positioned lakes never fail to captivate the trekker. At times we meet tough challenges, we ford icy rivers and cross the saddle that passes between the Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull ice-caps. Our Icelandic guides, born and bred in this wilderness, will be on hand at all times to bring this landscape alive with ancient folklore and with the backup of discreet 4 wheel drive vehicles and fully stocked campsites, we can move around carrying only the bare essentials and enjoy this unforgettable landscape to the fullest.
